NELSON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1954

Florence (SMITH) Langridge

This note comes from Pat (Warren) Drugge who talked to both Florence and her husband, 2004.

Sadly, Florence has had Alzheimer's disease for some 8 years. Harvey, her husband from the prairies came west when he was in the navy, met and married her.  He worked for the railway and was happily transferred to Port Coquitlam where the family had many opportunities to learn and work.

Their 3 children (1 girl and 3 boys) have all been successful, responsible citizens with great work habits and have produced 10 grandchildren.   Harvey is a loving, positive, accepting care-giver for Florence who is still at home. They have tapped into community support systems and meet the stages of deterioration in Florence's cognitive abilities one at a time. Florence attends a workshop in a Senior's Care Facility twice a week, reaching it by Handi-dart, thus providing respite for the family.  Their acreage is fenced so Florence can roam a bit and locked doors give security to all.

Harvey says Florence was a great mother and wife. After the children were grown, she worked for 10 years with the Mental Health Association at Riverview. Her favourite hobby was bingo.  Harvey has promised to deliver 75 hugs to her. One from each of her classmates.
