My Working Life and My Family:

I too left Nelson to find a job.  My original intention was to be a school teacher so I headed for Victoria Normal School for the necessary training.  Fortunately for all concerned, I saw an advertisement in the newspaper where B.C. Telephone Co. was looking for potential employees in Victoria and Vancouver.  It sounded calmer than a classroom full of kids, so I applied and fortunately was hired.  I chose to go to Vancouver.

To make this long story short, I met and married Wife #1, and together we produced four children.  After about nine years, she developed that old female disease: she got sick of me, so we divorced.

I then transferred to Squamish and found Wife #2.  We married and then we moved to Nelson.  Sadly, she also developed an illness, but this one had a name.  It was called Lou Gehrig’s Disease and unfortunately is fatal. By this time, 1991, I had the age and the service time in the Telephone Company to retire, so I did, and was able to nurse Patricia until 1993 when she passed away.

For 25 years of my working years I was a technician, installing and repairing switches for B.C. Tel. Co.  Later, I took a position keeping records of the cable pairs and what they were used for.

I now share my life with a very dear friend whose husband succumbed to cancer eight years ago. Mary Ann joined me in my home to my great delight in 1998. She has 4 children, a lovely girl and three boys, none of whom are living with us.

Of my children: two became teachers, one became a bus driver, one succumbed to cancer at the age of 28.

My Present Activities:

I work around my house (don’t we all?).  I have dabbled in stained glass.  I have played a few rounds of golf.  I am Treasurer for St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Mary-Ann and I have taken up cruising on the big luxury ships – quite fun and totally relaxing.

Some of My Favourite Memories:

  • swimming at the float at Lakeside Park
  • riding on the streetcars
  • Fall Fairs at the Civic Centre
  • curling after school
  • hooting with the cadets
  • one year when the Clyde Beatty Circus was in town
