Shirley (JOHNSON) Roberts
Family:
My Mom and brother are still in Nelson. My son Guy is living in Surrey with his wife and three sons. My son Lance is living in Claresholm, AB with his wife and daughter. My son Mark is living in Kanata, ON with his wife and daughter and son. I’m still in Oliver, now 44 years.
Present Activities:
Len and I spend as much time as Len’s lack of health allows going fishing for trout, groundfish and salmon. Also go hunting for grouse and deer. I’ve been very involved with Coats for Kids – free giveaway of winter clothes – for the past eight years. Also been on two strata councils for most of the last 23 years.
Work Before Retirement:
From age 40 to 60 I worked for West Kootenay Power as a meter reader. Marvellous job – outside, see all the lovely gardens, very busy so need to figure out what to do. Loved the dogs and cats. After marriage and until divorced, I was half owner of two orchards. It was very busy with the orchards and raising my three sons.
Some Favourite Memories:
Sleigh riding on Ymir Road – started where Kline’s Trailer Park is now and ended at where Rosemont overpass is now. Had to get out after fresh snowfall and before the sanding truck. Also after dark so could see the lights of the practically absent cars, and get out of the way.
Basketball dances, school dances and Junior Joymakers
The snow – loved the snow, sliding down the hills on waxed cardboard
