Nelson Memories:

  • Doug and I racing our Dad’s cars through the cemetery. He’s been my best friend for 54 years.
  • Jake Loomer (great guy!) teaching a chem class with his fly undone.
  • Mr. Peachy wacking Neil Horswill’s butt with a board in IA class.
  • Skating parties at Taghum.
  • Getting sick on beet wine with Scott, George and Doug.
  • Smoking punkwood with the same guys.
  • United Church Young Peoples Beach Parties.
  • Mona Loomer’s awesome boyfriend (Eng Phys student, rower on the champion UBC Olympic team, Athlone Scholar, etc.)
  • The rumored non-virgins club a couple of grades ahead of us.
  • The last time I saw Georgie Wallace at a Xmas party 1956(?).
  • Doug and I taking Maureen and Verna May to the Starlight theatre in my brother’s Model A roadster.
  • Johnny Norris’ outrage at our marks for a drama club performance in Grand Forks. The reviewer did not understand our play. Sorry John, but none of us did!
  • Eric’s private music lessons for select female students.
  • The scandal surrounding Earl Warren, a local disc jockey/announcer, and a high school girl. He surfaced later in Toronto as a DJ/announcer.
  • The Penticton V’s infamous Warwick brothers who chopped Earnie Gare and our Nelson Maple Leafs down with sticks and dirty play in 1954. The V’s went on to win the world’s championship.
  • Gail Jerome, a lovely girl with cards stacked against her from the start.  Her grandmother, whom she lived with, died in a fire in an old hotel in Nelson on Latimer (?) about 1954. I understand Gail died in a fire in Victoria a few years later while taking nursing. I really like her.
