NELSON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1954

50th Anniversary

Nelson High School,  September 10 – 12, 2004

Class of ’54 Song

Words and Music by Lee and Doris (Ratkowski) Karvonen

It began in 1942 when we went off to school,
Away from home, we made new friends, and it was kind of cool.
We’d ride our sleighs down Elwyn Street or way out on Ymir Road
Or bobsled back up Stanley when we grabbed a bumper tow.

Assemblies Monday mornings, Mrs. Kettlewell at the keys,
Finding perfect conkers that fell down from chestnut trees,
Playing softball games at recess, hide and seek or kick the can,
Spending hours down at Lakeside in the sunshine and the sand.

Chorus:

Oh, the class of ’54, it never was a bore.
Spring or summer or fall or winter, adventurous to the core.
Oh, the class of ’54, you couldn’t ask for more,
We’ll remember us forever; we’re the class of ’54.

The road trips with our sports teams, by train or car or bus,
Junior Joymakers taught us polkas and fox trots without a fuss.
Clair Loomer and his science labs, John Norris and English Lit,
Hockey games at the Civic Centre always were a hit.

Milkshakes from Wait’s News Stand, lunch at the Diamond Grill,
Being late for school ‘cause the streetcar couldn’t make it up the hill,
Selling boxes and egg cartons for money for the show,
And dates at the Starlight Drive-In if you had a car to go.

Chorus

The Drama Club had parties; they also put on plays,
Camp Koolaree was a wonderful place to spend the summer days.
Swimming at the Float at Lakeside, or skating in the wintertime
Or making your way up to Pulpit Rock ... just for the climb.

It was great to live in Nelson, a city with a heart.
You couldn’t find a better place where you could make a start.
Four seasons, a lake and mountains, it really is the best
And filled with such great people, Nelson’s truly blessed.
